5 Christmas TV ads that will make your heart melt

For some, Christmas is the best time of the year. Presents tied with shiny ribbons, cold weather (at least for those who live in the north), blinking lights and, of course, Santa Claus turns Christmas into the holiday that make us smile the most. It’s the time of the year where we have the opportunity to spend more time with our family and friends, drink some mulled wine and watch a movie as we relax. We all know which Christmas movies everyone likes to watch, but it wouldn’t be right not to mention some of the TV adverts that have made our hearts melt in the past.

At Holborn we love to show figures. However, this will be one of those times that we won’t be having a top 5, as you will be able to choose which one is the best for you! Without further ado, enjoy some Christmas ad masterpieces!

Sainsbury’s – “1914” (2014)

Henry Williamson, a nineteen-year-old private in the London Rifle Brigade stationed somewhere in France, wrote to his mother on December 26th 1914: “Yesterday the British & Germans met and shook hands in the ground between the trenches and exchanged souvenirs. Yes, all day Xmas day, & as I write. Marvellous, isn’t it?”

The ad was produced in collaboration with the Royal British Legion. Some found the ad insensitive; however, it is one of the most popular and successful Christmas ads in the last decade.

Sainsbury’s – Mog’s Christmas Calamity (2015)

Mog is a fictional character in a series of children’s books written by Judith Kerr. In 2015, she fell victim to a series of unfortunate events that almost had Christmas ruined for her family. However, the Christmas spirit saves the day and Mog enjoys her favourite egg in the end. You can see Judith Kerr playing the role of a neighbour somewhere in the background.

Boots – Special Because (2014)

This ad was released in 2014. The main character is an exhausted nurse that returns home only to see her whole family waiting for her to celebrate Christmas together. Doctors and nurses working in the NHS and other health services around the world deserve our respect and love for what they have accomplished in the last 2 years.

John Lewis – Man On The Moon (2015)

Some say that this is the best John Lewis Christmas ad ever. Norwegian singer Aurora reworked the 1994 Oasis B-side “Half The World Away”, with the old man on the Moon receiving his Christmas presents in one of the most heartwarming ads we have seen.

John Lewis – The Journey (2012)

Everyone deserves to be loved. This snowman travelled many miles to find his snowgirl, leaving us crying tears of happiness.

These are 5 of the best Christmas ads that we’ve seen – this would be the end of our blog but, since it is Christmas, we can be a bit cheeky and add one more ad that will have you smiling!

Brazilian chocolate brand Lacta published this ad last year. Santa is old and due to restrictions, he can’t go out to give kids their presents. Is Christmas over? No way, help is on the way!
